The fascinating fact about women is their ability to create a brand new organ from scratch. A placenta can be 15-20cm in diameter and about 3cm thick. It’s huge!! It is the lifeline for the baby and acts as the kidneys, liver, lungs and intestines. Is anyone else just blown away by the human body!!!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All of the baby’s blood and nutrition passes through the placenta, which is made up of tissue from both the mother and the baby. The mother and baby’s blood does NOT actually mix. However, the vessels are so close that oxygen and nutrients pass through the arteries from the mothers blood to the baby’s blood, and the carbon dioxide and waste products transfer from the baby’s into the mother’s blood. 🤯⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is really important that once the placenta is born it is checked by your midwife to make sure it is fully intact. Any part of the placenta left inside can be dangerous. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Remember, it is not over until the placenta is born so remember to keep the mood of the room the same until you birth your placenta. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You will most likely be lying on a bed enjoying some skin to skin and trying to birth the placenta in this position can be difficult. You need gravity on your side similar to when you birth your baby. So remember to change position if need be and where possible and you will be amazed how quickly you can birth the placenta once you are in a more upright position. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A healthy placenta is paramount and can be determined by means of a scan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How amazing are these placenta prints 📸@ari.and.elsie⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
